There are three basic connections in a geodesic dome: the 4-way base, the 5-way hub, and the 6-way hub. Using these injection molded parts, together with off-the-shelf PVC pipe, almost anyone can build the dome of their imagination. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, college students, professional and retired adults, and people in all countries of the world have used these simple hubs and a lot of creativity to make beautiful and functional geodesic domes.
The universe is a big place! Did you know that NASA is training for the Mars voyage in a geodesic dome on top of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea? Domes might even be an option for living space on the moon! Aside from those far-out applications, domes here on earth have been used for greenhouses, barns, shelters, hangars, garages, aviaries, projection structures for AV, survival sites, observatories and much more. As the most efficient way to contain space, combining strength, form and function, geodesic domes lend themselves to an almost infinite number of possibilities.
With Sonostar Basic Hub Kits, you can make your dome whatever size fits your purpose (within reason). You can choose to use ½” , 1”, or 1 ½” PVC pipe, depending on the strength you need, and you can choose the complexity of the dome, from frequency 2 (2V) to frequency 6 (6V). We have yet to find a country in the world where PVC pipe is not available, whether in metric or English Standard measurements.
